Bowerdale is the home on the internet of Paul Howell. I’m landscape photographer living in North Yorkshire, on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. My work is inspired by the being, the observing, the appreciation of nature, beauty, entropy and humanity’s place and relationship within it – be it truth or fiction.
Influenced by cinema, classic landscape painting and abstract concepts of form, flow and colour I use tones, layering and atmospherics to create works that have a quality of almost being from the imagination or memory.
Part of the beauty of the Yorkshire Dales, North York Moors and Lake District, areas where many of my works are created, is the presence of people within the landscape and the evidence of their role in shaping it. A theme I often use not to overwhelm the landscapes but as a detail to provide a subtle narrative within the work.
Preferring to use the still image I like to allow the viewer the freedom of interpretation of the narrative in the scene even in those works that are created with a specific story in mind.
